What does Asthma- och Allergiförbundet (Swedish Asthma and Allergy Association) want?
We want to increase the knowledge in others about what it is like to have an invisible disability like asthma and allergy. Thereby, we want to contribute to changing the attitudes of the public. An allergic person is often faced with the attitude that "surely, a little won't harm you" or " surely, you must be able to take a little". Planners, decision-makers and producers must take a greater responsibility for the explosive development of allergies.
We have networks within areas of food, skin, environment and children and family issues.
Our goal - an allergy free society
The association is working to:
- influence society to achieve better conditions of living for people with asthma and allergic illnesses
- through education and information achieve a greater understanding for the problems of asthmatics and allergic persons
- support the work of the county and local associations
- support the research within the field of asthma and allergy
Asthma- och Allergiförbundet was formed in 1956 by local associations. Today we have 148 local associations and 21 county associations around the country. Here allergic sufferers and their families gather to support and help each other mutually and influence the surrounding society. The Association is a joint resource for the local associations. Asthma och Allergiförbundet works like a popular movement for allergic people.
Both county and local associations are sovereign and have their own committees elected at the annual meetings of the associations. The work in the associations is voluntary and organised in different ways around the country. Some associations are carrying out lobbying work very actively and have many activities for members. Other associations are running nearly at a stand still.
Every third year there is a congress, the last in Maj 2004. This board was then elected.
